Planting distances for hedging:-

Beech, Privet, Holly, Hornbeam : 45cm apart

Leylandii, Lawsons, Red Cedar : 60-90cm apart

Laurel, Yew : 45-60cm apart

All above in a single row

Quickthorn, Blackthorn, Mixed native : double row, 6 per metre

Simple native hedge mix :-

Quickthorn : 75%

Hazel: 15%

Field Maple: 10% 

Other species can be added for a more varied hedge.
