Rhamnus frangula, commonly known as alder buckthorn, is a deciduous shrub or small tree belonging to the family Rhamnaceae. Native to Europe, western Asia, and parts of North Africa, it typically grows in damp woodlands, marshes, and along stream banks. The plant can reach heights of 2 to 6 meters and is characterized by smooth grey-brown bark, simple oval leaves with distinct parallel veins, and small, greenish-yellow flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer. These flowers are followed by glossy berries that turn from red to black as they ripen, providing food for birds but being mildly toxic to humans. Rhamnus frangula has long been used in traditional medicine, particularly as a source of frangulin-based laxatives once the bark has been properly aged or heat-treated to reduce toxicity. Ecologically, it supports pollinators and serves as a host plant for several butterfly species, though in some regions it has become invasive, outcompeting native vegetation.
