Quercus palustris, commonly known as the pin oak, is a deciduous tree native to North America, particularly the eastern and central United States. It thrives in wet, poorly-drained soils, often in floodplains and bottomlands, which is reflected in its species name "palustris," meaning "of the marsh." The pin oak is noted for its distinctive growth habit, with a straight trunk, and branches that spread horizontally, often forming a pyramid-like shape when young. Its leaves are deeply lobed and turn a vivid red in the autumn,  making it a popular choice for ornamental planting. The tree also produces small acorns, which serve as a vital food source for wildlife. Due to its adaptability, attractive form, and fall colour, Quercus palustris is widely used in landscaping and urban settings. Swamp Oak. Large tree with deeply lobed leaves turning scarlet red in autumn. Male catkins in Spring. Acorns. Ultimate height : 20 metres.
