Prunus padus, commonly known as the bird cherry, is a deciduous tree or large shrub belonging to the family Rosaceae. Native to Europe and northern Asia, it typically grows 8 to 15 meters tall and is often found along riverbanks, in moist woodlands, and in hedgerows. The bird cherry is easily identified by its fragrant, pendulous clusters of small white flowers that appear in spring, followed by small black cherries that ripen in late summer. These fruits are a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife, although they are bitter and astringent to humans. The leaves are oval with finely serrated edges and turn yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Prunus padus has long been valued in traditional medicine for its bark, which contains compounds with mild sedative and astringent properties. In addition to its ecological importance, the bird cherry is often planted ornamentally for its attractive blossoms and ability to thrive in cool, damp conditions.
