Pinus 'Austriaca', more accurately known as Pinus nigra subsp. nigra or the Austrian pine, is a robust and hardy evergreen conifer native to central and southern Europe. This subspecies is known for its dense, dark green needles, which grow in pairs and can reach up to 6 inches in length. Austrian pine is widely appreciated for its tolerance to urban pollution, drought, and poor soils, making it a popular choice for windbreaks, screens, and landscape plantings. It typically grows in a symmetrical, pyramidal form when young, gradually becoming more irregular and picturesque with age. Though susceptible to certain pests and diseases such as Diplodia tip blight, its resilience and adaptability continue to make it a valued tree in both public and private landscapes.
