Persicaria amplexicaulis, commonly known as mountain fleece or red bistort, is a vigorous, herbaceous perennial prized for its long-lasting, brightly colored flower spikes and robust growth habit. Typically reaching 3 to 5 feet in height, it produces dense, upright stems adorned with lance-shaped green leaves that often clasp the stems, giving the plant its botanical name amplexicaulis, meaning “stem-clasping.” From midsummer to early autumn, it bursts into striking spikes of pink, red, or occasionally white flowers, which attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.
