Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea,' commonly known as Purple Beech, can also be utilized as a distinctive and eye-catching hedging option. Creating a hedge with 'Purpurea' adds a touch of elegance and a burst of colour to the landscape, making it a popular choice for those seeking a unique and ornamental boundary. Here are some key considerations for using Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea' as a hedging plant: 1. Foliage Colour:

  • The standout feature of 'Purpurea' is its deep purple to reddish-brown foliage. When used in hedging, this cultivar provides a striking alternative to traditional green hedges, creating a visually appealing and vibrant boundary.

2. Formality and Structure:

  • Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea' has a naturally formal growth habit, making it well-suited for creating structured and well-defined hedges. Its rounded crown and dense foliage contribute to a neat and elegant appearance.

3. Height and Pruning:

  • Regular pruning is essential to maintain the desired height and shape of the 'Purpurea' hedge. This cultivar responds well to pruning, allowing for the creation of both formal and informal hedge designs.
  • The height of the hedge can be controlled through regular trimming, making it adaptable to different landscape requirements.

4. Seasonal Interest:

  • One of the advantages of using 'Purpurea' for hedging is the continuous seasonal interest it provides. The deep purple foliage remains vibrant throughout the growing season, offering a colourful backdrop to the landscape.
  • In the fall, the foliage transitions to coppery-brown, adding another layer of interest before winter.

5. Mixed Plantings:

  • Combining 'Purpurea' with other hedging plants or ornamental shrubs can create a dynamic and visually appealing landscape. The contrasting colours and textures contribute to an aesthetically pleasing overall design.

6. Versatility:

  • 'Purpurea' is versatile in terms of its adaptability to different soil types and its ability to thrive in various light conditions. This makes it suitable for a range of garden settings.

7. Maintenance:

  • While 'Purpurea' is generally low-maintenance, regular care is necessary to ensure a healthy and well-groomed hedge. Pruning in late summer or early autumn helps maintain the desired shape and encourages bushier growth

Every plant is checked by our team before it leaves the nursery. Smaller plants are securely boxed, while larger specimens and pallet orders are shipped on our specialist plant courier network to protect foliage and rootballs in transit.

How long does delivery take?

Most orders are dispatched within 7 working days. Larger specimens and rootballed plants may take a little longer, as we deliver these by pallet — we'll contact you to arrange a convenient delivery date. Full details are on our [Shipping Costs] page.

What if my plant arrives damaged or in poor condition?

Let us know within 48 hours of delivery with a couple of photos and we'll put it right with a replacement or refund. We stand behind everything we grow and sell.

Do you offer any guarantee on your plants?

All our plants are nursery-fresh and healthy on dispatch and our shipping companies are hand selected for the care they take, so we guarantee the plant's health on delivery. Let us know immediately is soemthing is wrong and we will provide you support.

Are your plants grown in the UK?

We're a family-run nursery based in Welshpool, Powys. Plants are either grown here on site or sourced from trusted specialist growers, and everything passes through our nursery for inspection before dispatch.

Can I collect my order instead of having it delivered?

Yes — you're welcome to collect from our nursery in Welshpool. Just select collection at checkout [or: give us a ring on 01938 553015 to arrange a time].

Do you sell to the public or trade only?

Both. Despite the name, anyone can order from us — and we offer competitive pricing for landscapers, garden designers and trade customers buying in volume. [Contact us for trade terms.]

Can I get advice before I order?

Absolutely. We're real plants people, not a call centre — ring us on 01938 553015 or email orders@derwenwholesale.co.uk and we'll happily help with sizing, spacing, variety choice or anything else.
