Carpinus betulus, commonly known as Hornbeam, is a deciduous tree that is widely valued for its versatility in landscaping and gardening. Here's an overview of the characteristics and uses of Carpinus betulus:
  1. Appearance:
    • Hornbeam is a medium to large-sized tree that typically grows to a height of 40 to 60 feet, with a similar spread. It has a distinctive, smooth, gray bark that develops a sinewy appearance as the tree matures.
    • The leaves of Hornbeam are serrated, oval-shaped, and bright green in color, turning to shades of yellow and brown in the fall. The foliage forms a dense canopy, providing effective shade.
  2. Seasonal Interest:
    • In spring, Hornbeam produces inconspicuous catkins, adding a subtle charm to the tree.
    • The fall coloration of Hornbeam's leaves, ranging from yellow to orange-brown, makes it a visually appealing choice for autumn landscapes.
  3. Adaptability:
    • Hornbeam is known for its adaptability to various soil types, including clay and chalky soils. It is tolerant of urban pollution, making it suitable for planting in both urban and rural environments.
    • This tree is hardy and can thrive in a range of climatic conditions, making it a versatile option for different regions.
  4. Hedging and Screening:
    • One of the notable uses of Carpinus betulus is as a hedging plant. Due to its dense branching and foliage, Hornbeam forms an effective and attractive hedge, providing privacy and acting as a windbreak.
    • The tree's ability to tolerate regular pruning makes it suitable for formal hedges, topiary, or more naturalistic hedgerows.
  5. Low Maintenance:
    • Hornbeam is relatively low-maintenance. Regular pruning can help maintain the desired shape and size, and it can be pruned into various forms, including pleached or espaliered hedges.
  6. Landscape Design:
    • Hornbeam is a versatile tree that fits well into various landscape designs. It can be used as a standalone specimen tree, in group plantings, or as part of a mixed border.
    • Its dense canopy provides effective shade, making it a popular choice for parks, gardens, and large landscapes.
  7. Wildlife Value:
    • Hornbeam provides habitat and food for various wildlife, including birds and insects. The dense foliage and branching structure offer shelter, making it ecologically beneficial.
  8. Durability:
    • Hornbeam is a long-lived tree with a slow to moderate growth rate. Its durability and adaptability contribute to its popularity as a landscape tree.

FAQs

How will my plants arrive?

Every plant is checked by our team before it leaves the nursery. Smaller plants are securely boxed, while larger specimens and pallet orders are shipped on our specialist plant courier network to protect foliage and rootballs in transit.

How long does delivery take?

Most orders are dispatched within 7 working days. Larger specimens and rootballed plants may take a little longer, as we deliver these by pallet — we'll contact you to arrange a convenient delivery date. Full details are on our [Shipping Costs] page.

What if my plant arrives damaged or in poor condition?

Let us know within 48 hours of delivery with a couple of photos and we'll put it right with a replacement or refund. We stand behind everything we grow and sell.

Do you offer any guarantee on your plants?

All our plants are nursery-fresh and healthy on dispatch and our shipping companies are hand selected for the care they take, so we guarantee the plant's health on delivery. Let us know immediately is soemthing is wrong and we will provide you support.

Are your plants grown in the UK?

We're a family-run nursery based in Welshpool, Powys. Plants are either grown here on site or sourced from trusted specialist growers, and everything passes through our nursery for inspection before dispatch.

Can I collect my order instead of having it delivered?

Yes — you're welcome to collect from our nursery in Welshpool. Just select collection at checkout [or: give us a ring on 01938 553015 to arrange a time].

Do you sell to the public or trade only?

Both. Despite the name, anyone can order from us — and we offer competitive pricing for landscapers, garden designers and trade customers buying in volume. [Contact us for trade terms.]

Can I get advice before I order?

Absolutely. We're real plants people, not a call centre — ring us on 01938 553015 or email orders@derwenwholesale.co.uk and we'll happily help with sizing, spacing, variety choice or anything else.

Do you deliver to my area?

We deliver across mainland UK. Some remote postcodes, the Scottish Highlands and islands may carry a surcharge or longer lead time — see our Shipping Costs page or get in touch.
