A dense, fast-growing deciduous tree with glossy bright green heart-shaped leaves. Yellow-brown catkins in spring before the leaves appear followed in autumn by small cone like seeds that are loved by birds. Like all alders it is happy in wet ground but the Italian alder will also tolerate dryer conditions. It will even be happy in coastal situations where it withstands wind and salt-laden air.
