Acer campestre, commonly known as Field Maple, is a deciduous tree that is often used for hedging due to its versatile characteristics and aesthetic appeal. Here's an overview of Acer campestre as a hedging plant:

  1. Appearance:
    • Field Maple is known for its compact and bushy growth habit, making it an ideal candidate for hedging. It typically grows to a height of 15-25 feet when mature, but when used as a hedge, it can be easily maintained at a lower height through regular pruning.
    • The leaves are small, green, and five-lobed, turning a vibrant yellow in the fall before dropping, providing a seasonal interest and adding visual appeal to the landscape.
  2. Seasonal Interest:
    • In spring, Field Maple produces inconspicuous yellow-green flowers, which are followed by the development of winged seeds known as samaras.
    • The fall colour transformation to yellow adds warmth and variety to the hedging, making it a visually pleasing choice for different seasons.
  3. Hardiness and Adaptability:
    • Field Maple is known for its hardiness and adaptability to a variety of soil types. It can thrive in both acidic and alkaline soils, making it a versatile option for different garden settings.
    • This tree is relatively tolerant of urban pollution, making it suitable for planting in urban environments or along streets.
  4. Wildlife Habitat:
    • The dense foliage of Field Maple provides an excellent habitat for birds and insects. It contributes positively to the local ecosystem by attracting pollinators and providing shelter for small wildlife.
  5. Low Maintenance:
    • Acer campestre is a relatively low-maintenance hedging plant. It responds well to regular pruning, allowing you to maintain the desired shape and size. Pruning can be done in late winter or early spring.
  6. Landscape Uses:
    • Field Maple is versatile and can be used in various landscape settings. As a hedge, it can be used to define property boundaries, create privacy screens, or as a windbreak.
    • It works well in both formal and informal garden designs, adapting to different styles and aesthetics.

FAQs

How will my plants arrive?

Every plant is checked by our team before it leaves the nursery. Smaller plants are securely boxed, while larger specimens and pallet orders are shipped on our specialist plant courier network to protect foliage and rootballs in transit.

How long does delivery take?

Most orders are dispatched within 7 working days. Larger specimens and rootballed plants may take a little longer, as we deliver these by pallet — we'll contact you to arrange a convenient delivery date. Full details are on our [Shipping Costs] page.

What if my plant arrives damaged or in poor condition?

Let us know within 48 hours of delivery with a couple of photos and we'll put it right with a replacement or refund. We stand behind everything we grow and sell.

Do you offer any guarantee on your plants?

All our plants are nursery-fresh and healthy on dispatch and our shipping companies are hand selected for the care they take, so we guarantee the plant's health on delivery. Let us know immediately is soemthing is wrong and we will provide you support.

Are your plants grown in the UK?

We're a family-run nursery based in Welshpool, Powys. Plants are either grown here on site or sourced from trusted specialist growers, and everything passes through our nursery for inspection before dispatch.

Can I collect my order instead of having it delivered?

Yes — you're welcome to collect from our nursery in Welshpool. Just select collection at checkout [or: give us a ring on 01938 553015 to arrange a time].

Do you sell to the public or trade only?

Both. Despite the name, anyone can order from us — and we offer competitive pricing for landscapers, garden designers and trade customers buying in volume. [Contact us for trade terms.]

Can I get advice before I order?

Absolutely. We're real plants people, not a call centre — ring us on 01938 553015 or email orders@derwenwholesale.co.uk and we'll happily help with sizing, spacing, variety choice or anything else.

Do you deliver to my area?

We deliver across mainland UK. Some remote postcodes, the Scottish Highlands and islands may carry a surcharge or longer lead time — see our Shipping Costs page or get in touch.
