Malus sylvestris, commonly known as the crab apple, is a charming native deciduous tree, cherished for its ornamental beauty and wildlife value. In spring, it produces a profusion of delicate, fragrant, pale pink or white blossoms that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. By autumn, the tree is adorned with small, yellow-green apples that add visual interest and provide a vital food source for birds and mammals. These tart fruits are also traditionally used to make jellies and ciders. Hardy and adaptable, crab apple thrives in a variety of soil types and is an excellent choice for naturalistic gardens, hedgerows, or mixed woodland plantings. Its compact size and seasonal appeal make it a versatile and ecologically significant addition to any landscape.
