Cupressocyparis x leylandii, commonly known as Leyland Cypress, is a widely used evergreen tree that has become popular for creating hedges. Here are some specific considerations and tips for using Leylandii for hedging:

  1. Rapid Growth:
    • Leyland Cypress is known for its exceptionally fast growth, making it an ideal choice for those looking to establish a hedge relatively quickly. However, this rapid growth requires consistent pruning to maintain the desired size and shape.
  2. Density and Screening:
    • One of the primary reasons Leylandii is chosen for hedging is its dense foliage. When planted closely together, these trees create a thick, evergreen barrier that provides privacy and serves as an effective windbreak.
  3. Sun and Soil Requirements:
    • Leyland Cypress thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Ensure that the hedge receives adequate sunlight for optimal growth.
    • While Leylandii is adaptable to different soil types, well-draining soil is essential. Poorly drained soil can lead to root rot issues.
  4. Watering:
    • Adequate watering is crucial, especially during the establishment phase. Leyland Cypress is relatively drought-tolerant once established.
  5. Pruning and Maintenance:
    • Regular pruning is necessary to control the height and width of Leylandii hedges. This is typically done in spring.
    • Start pruning when the trees are young to encourage a dense branching structure. Be cautious not to cut into older wood, as Leyland Cypress may not generate new growth from old branches.
  6. Potential Size Considerations:
    • Leyland Cypress has the potential to reach significant heights if not properly managed. It's important to assess the available space and plan for the mature size of the trees when using them for hedging.
  7. Seasonal Considerations:
    • Leylandii is an evergreen, providing year-round coverage. However, some browning of the interior foliage may occur over time, especially in shaded areas. Pruning and thinning can help improve air circulation and minimize this issue.

Every plant is checked by our team before it leaves the nursery. Smaller plants are securely boxed, while larger specimens and pallet orders are shipped on our specialist plant courier network to protect foliage and rootballs in transit.

How long does delivery take?

Most orders are dispatched within 7 working days. Larger specimens and rootballed plants may take a little longer, as we deliver these by pallet — we'll contact you to arrange a convenient delivery date. Full details are on our [Shipping Costs] page.

What if my plant arrives damaged or in poor condition?

Let us know within 48 hours of delivery with a couple of photos and we'll put it right with a replacement or refund. We stand behind everything we grow and sell.

Do you offer any guarantee on your plants?

All our plants are nursery-fresh and healthy on dispatch and our shipping companies are hand selected for the care they take, so we guarantee the plant's health on delivery. Let us know immediately is soemthing is wrong and we will provide you support.

Are your plants grown in the UK?

We're a family-run nursery based in Welshpool, Powys. Plants are either grown here on site or sourced from trusted specialist growers, and everything passes through our nursery for inspection before dispatch.

Can I collect my order instead of having it delivered?

Do you sell to the public or trade only?

Both. Despite the name, anyone can order from us — and we offer competitive pricing for landscapers, garden designers and trade customers buying in volume. [Contact us for trade terms.]

Can I get advice before I order?
