A graceful, deciduous, native tree whose bark turns white as it matures and whose thin, whip-like branches weep when young. Silver birch is a pioneer tree, the first to colonize a natural wood and therefore fast-growing and adaptable. Prefers lighter soils but will grow on most soils including chalk. Birch trees should not require much if any pruning, should this be necessary then do so in the autumn once the sap has begun falling as they have a tendency to bleed sap.
Planting Silver Birch
Will grow in most soils, including chalk.
Ensure that the planting hole is wide enough to spread out the roots without bending.
Mulch around the sapling leaving a good couple of inches around the stem to ensure good air circulation.
