Alnus glutinosa ‘Imperialis’, commonly called the cut-leaved alder, is a graceful deciduous tree prized for its finely dissected, fern-like foliage that gives it an elegant, airy appearance. A cultivar of the common alder, it typically grows to 20–40 feet in height with a narrow, upright form, making it suitable for smaller gardens or as an accent tree in larger landscapes. Like other alders, it thrives in moist soils and is often planted near water features or in low-lying areas where it can help stabilize the ground. Its delicate foliage casts dappled shade in summer, while its catkins add ornamental interest in late winter to early spring.
